Houston Restaurant Weeks was founded in 2003 by the late Cleverley Stone, a 26-year restaurant correspondent and philanthropist who pioneered the coverage of Houston’s restaurants and chefs across print, radio, and television media. She was known to Houstonians as host of “The Cleverley Show” on CBS Sports Radio 650/KIKK-AM and the food contributor to Fox 26/KRIV Morning News. Her vision to support local restaurants through their slowest dining month of the year was built around the rallying call for Houstonians to Dine Out & Do Good™, a beloved and highly anticipated time of the year for diners that has helped raise more than $23 million for the Houston Food Bank, providing more than 70 million meals to food-insecure Houstonians. The Cleverley Stone Foundation continues #cleverleyslegacy of engineering what is now the busiest restaurant month in Houston, along with sister event Eat Drink HTX held each February. Her daughter, Katie Stone, serves as president of the Foundation, carrying on this beloved Houston-born legacy.
Serving Houston and southeast Texas since 1982, Houston Food Bank’s mission is to provide food for better lives. We provide access to 143 million nutritious meals in 18 counties through our 1,600 community partners of food pantries, soup kitchens, social service providers and schools. Filling gaps on plates, we have a strong focus on healthy foods and fresh produce. In collaboration with our community, we advocate for policy change and promote dialogue on ways to increase access to food and to improve the lives of those in our communities, including services and connections to programs that address the root causes of hunger and are aimed at helping families achieve long-term stability: nutrition education, health management and help with securing state-funded assistance. We are a resource for individuals and families in times of hardship. Houston Food Bank works alongside our partner food banks in Montgomery County, Galveston County and Brazos Valley. Houston Food Bank is a certified member of Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network, with a four-star rating from Charity Navigator for the 14th consecutive year. “As more families across Texas are struggling to put food on the table, the continued support from Houston Restaurant Weeks, Houston restaurants and diners provides both nourishment and hope for children, families and senior citizens experiencing food insecurity across Houston Food Bank's 18-county service area. Feeding others is one of the most universal expressions of care, and Houston Food Bank is grateful for HRW's long-standing support, which allows us to provide food for better lives.”
